Circle Square/Square Circle
1998 / Elizabeth Hertz / Springfield
As implied by its title, this Cor-ten welded steel sculpture is an amalgamation of two geometric forms, the circle and the square. One "end" of the work is circular, the square consequently the outside form of the sculpture changes subtly from one end to the other. Each end is also pierced with its opposite form. (e.g. a square within the circular end, a circle within the square), which also changes from end to end creating a deceptively simple yet complex shift of shape and volume-in both a positive and negative manner. The sculpture rests upon two pair of parallel railroad ties, one stacked upon the other perpendicularly."
