Library Garden Gate and Figures
1998 / Tom Otterness / Cleveland
Two sets of monumental bronze gates form the south and north entrances to the Eastman Reading Garden. Playful bronze figures--Otterness's trademark--are busy at work in the sculpture. Freestanding figures are also included in a planter on Superior Avenue, on a ledge on the front of the Louis Stokes Wing of the library, and on a stone ledge in the Eastman Reading Garden. The grillework of the gates is formed by an abstract collection of letters and word parts. The north and south gates are not identical. Tan Lin and Maya Lin contributed to the selection of the letters and words.
