1972 / Barna von Sartory / Cincinnati
A 35 ton block of Indiana limestone rests horizontally atop a metalwork portal. This portal was originally coated with polished stainless steel sheeting that was removed after it had been vandalized. The portal is a post and lintel style and serves as an entrance to the riverwalk. The steel post and lintel symbolize law, which supports the limestone block that symbolizes society.
The work was the winning design of a competition held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Cincinnati Bar Association. It has been moved four times since its original installation on Fountain Square.
