Thomas Jefferson

1911 / Karl T.F. Bitter / Cleveland

Thomas jefferson.JPG

Heroic size portrait of Thomas Jefferson in 18th century clothes is seated on a chair. He is leaned forward; one arm rests over the back of the chair; the other holds the Declaration of Independence. His face is hard and determined. This sculpture plays across the space to the statue of one of Jefferson's most prominent political rivals and fellow founding father Alexander Hamilton. The two famously and directly disputed the direction the young nation should move in.

Jefferson was the primary of author of the Declaration of Independence, the third US President, and a chief architect of the United States' politics.
