Justinian
1912 / Isidore Konti / Cleveland
Portrait of Justinian stands with both arms bent and hands resting on his chest. He is wearing classical robes and a head dress.
The second-easternmost figure in a series of four statues on the north side of the Cuyahoga County Courthouse. All four of these figures were level-headed, just leaders who either instituted or reformed their society's respective codes of law in a manner that is still followed today.
Justinian is noted for having rewritten and codified the Law in the early Byzantine Empire. Borrowed from the recently defunct Roman Empire, this written version of the law, the Corpus Jurus Civilis, is still the basis of many legal systems around the world today.
