Galactic Spanner
1984 / Fred Schmidt / Cleveland
Abstract sculptor and Cleveland native Fred Schmidt was an industrial welder before he was an artist. After welding together some random metal shapes, he caught an inspired passion to create. Much of his work features twisting forms and dense horizontal volumes, but Galactic Spanner is much less.
Strikingly minimal for Schmidt, Galactic Spanner is just four, slightly curved bars of metal coming out of the ground. All of them curve in some way, and two of them intersect at a pointed angle. The minimal design in a piece named "Galactic Spanner" is interesting, especially because of how active his other pieces tend to be.
