Pima
1993 / Arthur Gibbons / Cleveland
Two sheets of metal flutter out of a stout, heavy pedestal. The slabs stretch and soar together, and each sheet's shapely shadow casts upon the other's shiny surface. One wraps slightly around the other, as if locked in a penitent embrace. Prominent torch marks serve the dual purpose of calling to mind the hand of the artist and providing a fittingly ill-fitting transition into the thick, geometric pedestal. While the sheets above shimmer and flow, the pedestal has one level of light on each flat plane. It is a motionless platform that supports a ballet.
Pima is part of Gibbons' pedestal series, where Gibbons created sculptures that all incorporated the sculpted pedestal in some manner.
