Young Lion and Fatling Together

1887 / Henry Church, Jr. / Chagrin Falls

00945 Young Lion and Fatling.jpg

The piece, made from sandstone, is a large sculpture originally portraying a lion and a fatling, and the figure of Isaiah as a small boy leading them (based on a bible verse Isaiah 11:6).

It was originally made with the intention of ornamenting the Chagrin Falls village square but was installed at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery around 1904-1906. While it was located in the cemetery, the figure of the child was stolen and the eyes of the statue (originally glass taxidermy eyes) were vandalized. The staff of the Cleveland Museum of Art replaced the damaged eyes with plexiglass ones.

The sculpture was on long term loan to the Cleveland Museum of Art 1996-2014. It was relocated to Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Chagrin Falls in 2014 and placed at the gravesite of the artist.
