Oeccan

1990 / Arthur Gibbons / Cleveland

Oeccan2017a.jpg

An abstract metal sculpture resting on a stone base with twelve interlocking black metal "plates". Each plate is made of hot, rolled steel that Gibbons welded into a massive columnar form. The edges of the plates are rough and unclean, as if this sculpture is a pencil drawing in three dimension.

Gibbons uses a hypnotic, unpredictable pattern of straight and round edges on each plate. They all intersect at seemingly random angles, never quite meeting at a perfect, flush point. This leaves each plate completely distinct; unmistakable for the next. Guarding the entrance to CWRU's Humanities campus, perhaps Gibbons is making a comment on how a beautiful coherent whole can always come about. no matter how seemingly disparate part seems.
