Coastlines

1983 / David Evans Black / Cleveland

coastlines 1.JPG

A series of geometric forms, curved and straight, that arch over a solid triangular prism. Two undulating arms that stretch from the ground over to the center seem to fight against the strong, straight bars that interrupt the smooth contours of the piece. A single white piece hooks off of the tip of the triangular base, giving a swan-like appearance to this

Black refers to much of his work as "proto-architecture", which functionally explains the arch-like form he chose to use. The piece's stark white color and location in the heart of the Health Sciences Campus endow the sculpture with an angelic personality; as if the huge "wings" are open and asking people to come and be healed. The name "Coastlines" suggests a division of some sort. Perhaps Black is likening the idea of standing on the coast, looking out at the vast, uncharted seas to medical research and discovery.
