Morning Star I

1982 / Jon Barlow Hudson / Cleveland

MorningStar2017a.jpg

An abstract, geometrized representation of a star. Composed entirely of reflective quadrilaterals and triangles, Morningstar bends and refracts everything around it, from the trees to the sunlight. Hudson's expert use of negative space keeps the viewer lost, as there are times that one ends up looking straight through the entire sculpture and at the grass on the other side. These "tunnels" through the Morningstar infinitely reflect the images within the tunnel, allowing one to easily get lost within the work. Perhaps this is a reference to the piece's cosmic, infinite name.

A fifteen foot wide version of Morningstar was constructed for the 1988 World Expo in Brisbane, Australia.
