Grid #14
1983 / Jon Fordyce / Cleveland
Grid #14 consists of 4 flat, vertical steel poles coming straight out of the ground, each on one side of a square. Each pole supports a perpendicular horizontal beam. Each beam meets in the middle at an "origin" of sorts. A series of bent pipes, paddles, and disks tangle about in the middle, like advanced circuitry or wiring. Fordyce uses a number of different shapes and sizes to convince the eye that the piece is much more complex than it actually is.
Fordyce is often considered one of the first sculptors to use computer design as a tool. It was during his study on how to utilize and create computer generated sculpture forms that he created Grid #14.
