Waywood Walls
1983 / Brinsley Tyrrell / Cleveland
A set of bronze walls and tree stumps. The stumps all seem to have been wrapped with barbed wire, and the walls are adorned with lush undergrowth. Tyrrell was inspired to create this work by the nature that surrounded his home in Kent, OH. Fallen trees, branches, and neglected fences were all around his property. The piece was originally sculpted in clay. A wax cast was then made and used to create the final bronze piece. Tyrrell's fingerprints are still evident in the bronze, which was a way for him to suggest human touch and intimacy with this work.
Tyrrell was born in Kent in the UK, who moved to the US in the 70's after training in London. While living in Kent, OH, many of his sculptures were inspired by the surrounding landscapes and views.
