Bust of William Shakespeare
1916 / Joseph Motto & Stephen Rebeck / Cleveland
A bronze bust depicting author William Shakespeare in the British Cultural Gardens, formally known as the Shakespeare Garden. Joseph Motto, one of the two artists who worked on the bust, was a 1912 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art whose works are displayed throughout Europe. A sculptor, painter, and ceramicist, Motto taught at both the Cleveland Institute of Art and Hawken School. Motto shared a studio and practice Cleveland sculptor Stephen Rebeck. Together they completed the bust of Shakespeare as a private commission.
