Dedicatory Plaque of Iwo Jima Memorial

Part of a larger monument square, this granite Iwo Jima memorial was dedicated in 2008 to all U.S. armed forces who served in the conflict. The American Flag that flies above the monument appears to be held by the engraved soldiers, making the memorial a 3-D rendition of Joe Rosenthal's iconic photograph of U.S. Marines raising a flag above Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. The back, which was inscribed in 2018 by Robert Howard of Quality Monument Service, contains the names of local service members from the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II, who were not on the nearby memorial wall of 800 names. There are four pictures in a section called "The Four Chaplains," in honor of the service members who stayed behind on the sinking USAT Dorchester, which had been hit by a German torpedo, in order to allow others to survive.

New Straitsville's Monument Square is wheelchair-accessible and easily visible. It's located next to the local library, which has parking.

Plaque on small granite piece attached to the larger work:
"Dedicated May 17, 2008. / First raising of the U.S. flag over Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima, February 19 to March 26, 1945. / The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought by the United States and Japan in February and March 1945, during the Pacific campaign of World War II. The U.S. invasion, known as Operation Detachment, was aimed at capturing the airfields on Iwo Jima. / This memorial is dedicated to all the US armed forces that served during this conflict."
2018 inscription on back:
"In memory of all veterans" followed by 186 names.
