Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Chapel Figures
1887 / Joseph Carabelli / Marion
Life-size carved stone figures that stand above the west and east doorways of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Chapel in Marion Cemetery.
The figure on the west side has a large mustache and is wearing a uniform with cap and cape, holding a rifle in his left hand with the butt resting on the ground and has his right hand on his hip.
The figure on the east side has as smaller mustache and is also wearing a uniform with a cape, but his hat has a wider brim and he is resting both hands on the hilt of a sword that is in front of him with the tip on the ground (except the lower half of the sword has broken off).
The chapel was designed by the architect W. C. Whitehead and built in 1887. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
