1914 / John Quincy Adams Ward / Urbana

00603 old.jpg

A Native American in traditional dress stands leaning forward with a dog at his proper right side. He carries a bow and arrow under his arm.

This is a replica of Ward's famous The Indian Hunter sculpture, which was the first statue by an American artist placed in New York City's Central Park. Upon Ward's passing in 1910, his wife commissioned this replica. It was completed in 1914 and used to mark his grave in Urbana, Ohio, where he was born. The base has a plaque that reads, "John Quincy Adams Ward, Sculptor, Born Urbana June 29, 1830, Died New York City May 1, 1910. This replica of his first statue is a memorial gift to his fellow townsmen erected by his wife to mark his grave."

It was restored in 2018 and rededicated October 27 of that year.
