Pendleton Spinnradls
2014 / Wowhaus / Cincinnati
This pair of works feature music box components mounted on a 14-foot decorated base. Users can interact with the works by using crank wheels on the bases to operate the music boxes.
While the works were designed by Wowhaus, they feature components made by various companies, including local workshops: Rookwood Pottery (ceramic tiles) and The Verdin Company (housing and gearwork).
The works were designed with input from the community, to represent the uniqueness of the Pendleton neighborhood. For example, there are Rookwood tiles of stars, representing the north star and the neighborhood's connection to the Underground Railroad. One of the music boxes plays "Coney Island Dip" (by a local Cincinnati composer) and the other plays "Spinnradl" (a traditional German dance tune).
