Washington Cemetery Fountain
1892 / Louis Sauvageau / Washington Court House
This three-tiered fountain features at its top a woman pouring water from an urn. The middle tier includes sculptures of three cherubs, while the two sculptures on the bottom tier depict two seated women, both with their chins resting on their hands, as if grieving or in thought.
The fountain, designed by French sculptor Louis Sauvageau and cast by the J.W. Fiske Company, was installed in the Washington Cemetery in 1892. The fountain fell into disrepair over time, and elements went missing from the work. The repair and restoration of the fountain was funded by the efforts of The Garden Clubs of Fayette County and completed by the Karkadoulias Bronze Art Company. It was reinstalled in the cemetery in 2003 after the work was completed.
