Cow
2008 / Chris McConnell / Middlefield
An enormous cow, sculpted from meticulously re-formed car hoods. McConnell, a Cleveland Institute of Art sculpture student, was commissioned to create a large piece of work to attract customers to the Vancura Gallery of Fine Art. Over the course of two months, McConnell designed and sculpted this colossal cow. His choice of material was unique, but sensitive: he wanted to use inexpensive, recycled material to construct the sculpture and ultimately decided on repurposing junk car hoods.
The final product is this behemoth bessie. The naturalistic contours and subtle forms made from clunky car hoods are a testament to McConnell's artistry and craftsmanship. The cow is expressive in its face and ears, but relaxed in its pose, allowing a pervasive energy of balance and innocent naivety to overtake the viewer.
