Lady Justice, Union County Courthouse

1883 / D.W. Gibbs / Marysville

Clock Tower and Lady Justice from Front

A ten-foot tall statue of lady justice that stands on top of the cupola of the Union County Courthouse in Marysville, Ohio. The statue was part of the building's original design by architect D.W. Gibbs, and specifications for the building design held by the Union County Archives state that the figure of "Justice" was "to be made of zinc, correct in form in every particular, artistically modeled." The statue held scales in her outstretched left hand and gripped the hilt of a sword that was held facing down on her right side.

The scales blew off as the remnants of Hurricane Ike passed over in September of 2008, and the derecho that hit Ohio in June of 2012 took the left arm off completely. It was subsequently noticed that the sword was missing as well. Both the arm and sword were found on the roof of the courthouse and repairs to the statue were included with the necessary repairs to the courthouse in 2013.
