Pope Gregory the Great.JPG

Portrait of Pope Gregory the Great wearing mitre and robes.

The westernmost figure in a series of four statues on the north side of the Cuyahoga County Courthouse. All four of these figures were level-headed, just leaders who either instituted or reformed their society's respective codes of law in a manner that is still followed today.

Pope Gregory was fluent in imperial law as well as canon law, even as a young man, which came in very handy once he ascended to the Seat of the Papacy in the sixth century. He was able to make a definitive outline of the roles of bishops, priests, and pastors in the lives of their respective flocks, and he almost completely reformed the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in a manner that is followed today.
