Energy in Repose

1923 / Henry Hering / Cleveland

energy in Repose 3.JPG

A burly man wearing a tunic sits on a rock. His right hand rests on his thigh, and his left hand holds a hammer. His muscles are well-defined, showing that he is a laborer. The title suggests that this figure represents man in his peak physical state allowing his strength to be guided by intelligence.

This piece was sculpted by Henry Hering, whose other work includes the titanic figures of "the Guardians of Traffic" on the Lorain-Carnegie bridge in Cleveland. Energy in Repose is considered one of his more traditional pieces, as late in his career his work started to become more Art Deco in style.
