Albatross
1969 / Michael McConnell / Athens
This two-ton abstract piece features several "C" and "S" - shaped pieces welded together. The dark brown sculpture is made of cor-ten steel on the outside and steel angle iron on the inside.
Albatross can be seen outside the Park Place entrance of Ohio University's Alden Library, where it has sat since its installation a few months after Alden opened in 1969. A May 29, 1969, Ohio University press release declared that, "the sculpture repeats in graceful arcs and upward thrusting wings the vertical linear lines of the new seven story building."
The artist, OU alum Michael McConnell (BFA '70), was a former sculpture student of David Hostetler, whose "Standing Woman" statue poses in a garden outside of the library entrance on the opposite side of the building.
