Native Son

2012 / Eric Oberg / Georgetown

Georgetown_UlyssesGrant_StreetView.png

A statue of Ulysses S. Grant in a uniform of the Union army, based on the one in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. According to an article in The Ledger Independent, the statue is of "...Grant as he looked during the Civil War, a younger and thinner man. The face on the Rotunda statue, Lodwick said, is that of Grant during his presidency, when he was older and heavier."

The sculpture stands on a black granite base featuring images from Grant's time as Commander of the Union Army (left panel) and as 18th President of the United States (right panel). The back panel reads: "Let Us Have Peace" - Ulysses S. Grant, 1868. The front panel reads: Ulysses S. Grant Native son "...this place remained my home..."

The Ledger Independent article lists the sculptor's name as Eric Oderg, instead of Eric Oberg. The article also mentions an anonymous sculptor who began the statue before Oberg took over.
