Legend of the Iron Hoop
1981 / Brinsley Tyrrell / Kent
In 1978, Tyrrell was selected to create a sculpture for an outdoor exhibition of contemporary sculpture that was to be held at Edgewater park for the summer of 1979. He created the 5 part piece entitled "Legend of the Iron hoop." After the exhibition was over, Governor Celeste asked that the piece be moved to his mansion, where it stayed until the Ohio Arts Council purchased it under Governor Taft. and moved to their headquarters in Columbus. After a few years in Columbus, the piece was gifted to Kent State University, where it remains today.
Upon seeing the piece, Harvey Buchannan, chair of the Art History department of CWRU at the time asked Tyrrell for a similar piece, which never came to be.
Each element of The Legend of the Iron Hoop was inspired by the pastoral views that Tyrrell and his wife had on their home in Kent, Ohio: he unique forms created by dry wood twisting with the expansive undergrowth.
